The Power of Purpose
Monday, November 9, 2009 at 05:47AM Recently I was asked to assist a small, but highly successful Vermont company. Their problem is one every business owner would love to have - How to accomidate explosive growth.
In the process of developing a plan for managing growth, we revisited their original founding strategies. What impressed me was that they really only had a small list of basic guidlines that governed pretty much all their business decisions.
Five simple statements conveyed what they considered to be their Puropose for starting and growing a business. From our experience, like many really powerful guiding statements, these accomplished two essential things for this company.
- Kept it laser focussed on what was absolutely essential.
- Allowed the maximum degree of creativity for how to meet these goals.
What arose from this beginning is a passionate, purpose and value driven company, that also just happens to be extremely successful, and at the same time very satisfying for it's owners to run.

What I also realized in sitting with these statements, is that they are universal enough that they could be used by just about any Vermont business, which is why I share them below.
- Produce only high quality Vermont Made products that are healthy and environmentally sound.
- Develop innovative, efficient and sustainable production technology and methods.
- Create Branding, Marketing, and Sales and Operating strategies that are aligned with the very best of Vermont’s progressive business practices.
- Create efficiencies and shared opportunities by developing mutually advantageous strategic relationships with like-minded businesses and professionals.
- Be grateful for what we accomplish and generous in sharing what we receive.
